How to compress a Word file in three steps

  1. Pick the document

Drop a DOCX, PPTX or XLSX onto the compressor. DigiCompress checks the file structure to confirm it’s a real Office document.

  2. Choose a level

The compressor shrinks the pictures embedded in the document and repacks the file. Pick a smaller size or higher quality.

  3. Download it

Save the new file — it opens in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Docs or LibreOffice as before — and the tab clears both copies.

Why Word files get so big, and why to keep them private

A modern Office file is a ZIP package of text, styles and media. The text is tiny; what makes a DOCX hit 40 MB is almost always pictures — phone photos pasted at full resolution, screenshots, scanned signatures. Shrinking those images, without touching your words or formatting, is where nearly all the savings come from.

The documents people need to shrink are usually the sensitive ones: CVs with home addresses, reports with client names, HR letters, pitch decks, financial models. DigiCompress opens and repacks the file entirely inside your browser, so your draft is never uploaded or stored anywhere.

Tips for leaner documents

Photo-heavy files shrink most
Reports with many photos, or slide decks full of images, often drop to a fraction of their size.
Text-only files are already small
If a DOCX is mostly words, it’s probably already compact. Large size almost always means large images.
Need a PDF instead?
If the file is final, export it to PDF and use the PDF compressor — PDFs are often the format portals ask for.
Track changes and comments are kept
Compression only touches embedded media. Your text, comments and revisions stay as they were.

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure? Email hello@digicompress.com.

Will my formatting change?

No. Only the embedded images are re-compressed; text, fonts, styles, tables and layout are left untouched.

Can I compress PowerPoint and Excel files too?

Yes. PPTX and XLSX use the same package format as DOCX, so the same compressor handles all three.

Does it work with old .doc files?

Not directly. Open the .doc in Word or LibreOffice, save it as .docx, then compress it here.

Why is my document barely smaller?

If it contains few or small images, there isn’t much to shrink. Text-heavy documents are already efficient.

Is my document uploaded for processing?

No. It’s opened and repacked inside your browser tab and never sent to DigiCompress or anyone else.

Is DigiCompress free?

Yes. You can compress 3 files a day without an account. Sign in with Google or an email magic link to compress as many files as you like. We don’t sell anything inside the tool, and we never ask for payment details.

Ready when you are.
